SUMMARY:The Mind's Influence on our Health and Happiness\, Psychologist - Catherine Sanderson
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Sanderson is the Manwell Family Professor of Life Sciences (Psychology) at Amherst College.  Known on campus as the “Professor of Happiness\,” she teaches full time and is among the most popular teachers.  She received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Health and Development from Stanford University\, and received both masters and doctoral degrees in Psychology from Princeton University.  Professor Sanderson’s research examines how personality and social variables influence health-related behaviors\, the development of persuasive messages and interventions to prevent unhealthy behavior\, and the predictors of relationship satisfaction.  This research has received grant funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health.  Professor Sanderson has published multiple journal articles\, book chapters\, and textbooks\, and in 2012\, she was named one of the country’s top 300 professors by the Princeton Review.

SUMMARY:Author and Literary Scholar - Elliot Engel
DESCRIPTION:Elliot Engel is an author\, writer\, and literary scholar. He has been a freelance lecturer on humanities topics for more than 30 years. Dr. Engel has written ten books published in England\, Japan\, and the United States\, including A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain\, an edited collection of several of his well-known lectures.  His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS television stations across the country.  He has lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents including Antarctica. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines including Newsweek. Four plays that he has written have been produced during the last ten years. Dr. Engel resides in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, where he has taught at the University of North Carolina\, North Carolina State University\, and Duke University.   He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won that university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. Professor Engel continues to teach outside the classroom and give entertaining and inspiring literary and historical programs throughout the world.

SUMMARY:International Journalist and Media Consultant - Jim Laurie
DESCRIPTION:Jim Laurie is an American journalist and broadcaster.  As director of the media consulting firm\, Focus Asia Productions Ltd.\, Mr. Laurie divides his time between Hong Kong and Washington\, DC.  He was a global correspondent for ABC News and NBC News and is the winner of two Emmy Awards\, a Peabody\, and an Overseas Press Club Award.  He has interviewed many historically influential Asian leaders including the Dalai Lama.  Since 2004\, Mr. Laurie has specialized in the development of global television news channels.  As a journalist\, he has been witness to some of the defining moments in Asia’s history over the past 40 years.  Mr. Laurie was the only American network correspondent to cover the communist takeover of Saigon\, and reported from Beijing on the events of Tiananmen Square.  Mr. Laurie graduated from American University with a degree in History and a certificate in Asian Studies. His postgraduate studies were at George Washington University’s Sino-Soviet Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Jean Kilbourne is recognized around the world for her pioneering work on the image of women in advertising. In the late 1960s\, she began her exploration of the connection between advertising and public health issues. She created the renowned film series Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women and authored the award-winning book Can’t buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel. Jean received her BA in English from Wellesley College and a doctorate in education from Boston University. She has received numerous honorary degrees and national awards. Jean is known for her ability to present provocative topics in a way that encourages dialogue and empowers action.

He produced Angel Passing\, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won\, among other awards\, the grand prize at WorldFest Houston. Marc has taught screenwriting\, playwriting\, and film analysis at Johns Hopkins\, the University of Pennsylvania (his alma mater)\, Columbia University\, and Yale University. He led the Screenwriting Series at the Smithsonian Institution. Marc studied Irish and English Drama at Oxford University\, received his MA from the University of East Anglia in England\, and earned an MFA in playwriting from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

Her latest book is Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World. Ann Arbor native and U-M grad\, Robin received an honorary degree from her alma mater in 2015.
